The Sierra Leone Police has recorded 2,275fatalities ( 703 cases involving passengers, 522 pedestrians and 310 drivers) out of the 4,156 road crashes which occurred in 2021, a senior police officer said recently.
The Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Kaprie S. Kamara told a news conference in Freetown that out of the 4,156 road crashes, human error accounted for 3,627 crashes.
AIG Kamara also noted that Western Area Urban recorded 695 cases with 18 fatalities, adding that 493 crashes in Freetown West were caused by human error, and 94 due to mechanical failure.
“The Sierra Leone Police also recorded 992 road crashes from Freetown West, 91 cases for North West, 76 cases for North East, 58 cases Southern Region and 363 cases in the Eastern Region,” AIG Kamara said.
