HRCSL Empowers Staff of Koidu Limited

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone through the Directorate of Business and Human Rights and Labour Relations on Saturday, March 5, 2022 commenced capacity buildiing training for staff of Koidu Limited in Koidu City, Kono District on business and human rights and conflict mitigation.

Senior Management of  the Compamy closely collaborated with the HRCSL to help build knowledge and capacity of all levels of staff, including the trade union operating within the company, as well as members of the host community of rights and responsibility relating to investments during the course of the training.

The training at the compamy’s headqurters will run throughout this month, catering for all management, middle level and junior staff of the company, as well as some members of the host communities.

Four different sessions, which will run on weekends, have been scheduled by the Commission in collaboration with the company so that every staff will benefit.

The objectives are to introduce the concept of business and human rights to management and staff of the company; establish the link between compliance and successful business operations; establish the rights, duties and responsibilities of employer, employees and the host communities; and strengthen the collaboration between the Company and the Commission.

The training will help every sector in the operational chain of the company, thereby increasing productivity, good employee-employer relations, good community relations and a better business environment.

During the first session, which targeted the senior management cadre of the company, Commissioner Oversight for Business and Human Rights Directorate, Dr. Gassan Abess urged employees to be in good working terms with their employers, while at the same time emloyers ensuring that their employees are safe and conditions of service met.

Presentations during the frist session include; Women’s Rights and SGBV in Companies and Host Communities by the Chairperson; Madam Patricia Narsu Ndanema, Corporate Social Responsibility Versus Corporate Responsibility to Respect Rights by Commisioner Dr. Gassan Abess, Highlights of Business and Human Rights Related Conflicts in Sierra Leone by Head of the Directorate; Abdulai Yollah Bangura and Conflict and Conflict Mitigation in Business Related Commuities by Moses Massaquoi. 

Certificates will be handed over to staff and host community members who participated in each of the sessions.

Some of the staff who participated in the first session expressed delight for the opportunity provided them to be part of the training and assured that what they have learnt during the two days will be put into practice.
