Voters Go to Polls in June

In a statement put out last Friday from the Office of the President, voters will go to the polls on June 24, 2023 to elect their representatives in Parliament and councillors.

The statement does not fix any date for the Presidential election, but it is apparent that it will be held alongside the Parliamentary and local council’s elections.

“Furthermore, Government wishes it to be known that in exercise of the powers conferred upon the President by Sections 57 and 103 of the Public Elections Act, 2012 (Act No. 4 of 2012) and after consultation with the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, the President has appointed the 20th May 2023 for the election of Paramount Chiefs and 24th June 2023 for the elections of Ordinary Members of Parliament and Local Councils, respectively.”

The Notice further indicated that the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone also intends to register eligible Sierra Leoneans within the period of September 3rd and October 4th 2022 in respect of Presidential, Parliamentary, Local Councils and Village Head elections to be held in 2023 according to Section 22 of Public Elections Act , 2012 (Act No. 4 of 2012)

“The Bio Metric Technology and Fixed Registration Centre shall be used to capture both the biographic and biometric of eligible voters. The Electoral Commission shall publish notices in Form A of the Second Schedule of the Public Elections, Act, 2012 (Act No. 4 of 2012) on March 31st 2022, inviting all eligible voters to present themselves for registration in the wards of which notices are published,” the Office of the President said in the notice.
