As many as 70 cattle, sheep and goats have died due to a strange disease which has so far infected more than 200 animals across Kamasodo Chiefdom in Port Loko District.
Chernor Jalloh is one of the affected cattle herders in Tain Kabereh town. He said that earlier they observed that two cattle were sick and died few days later. He said that they initially though it was food poisoning. He said that 40 cattle, 30 goats and sheep have died of the disease so far.
He said that disease had spread to six cattle sheds within the community.
Mr Abdul Jah is the Livestock officer attached to the Port Loko Agriculture Office. He said that the outbreak of the disease has create alarm among cattle herders. He confirmed the death of farm animals but could not state the type of disease which was contracted by the animals.
He said that they have reported the outbreak to headquarters for urgent action.
Jah warned people not to eat the remains of the dead animals.
