The Chairman of Port Loko District Council, Mr. Ibrahim Santigie Bangura has applauded the European Union for providing funds for the development of communities in the port Loko District and the country.
The Port Loko District Council is one of the beneficiaries of the European Union funded project: “Strengthening Local Governance, Decentralization and Sustainable Urban Development through Territorial Approach to Local Economic Development in Sierra Leone “.
Bangura said that this is the second European Union funded project his council has benefitted from.
He said that this project would go a long way to salvage the problems of hard-to-reach communities in Port Loko District and strengthen sustainable development at ward level.
He said that the project will build capacity of councils through coordination and cooperation. He assured that at the end of the implementation of the project, communities would have been transformed.
The project is being implemented by district and locals. Some of the development activities that is being undertaking by the local and districts councils under the project include, but not limited to the following: construction water wells , improve hygiene and sanitation and strengthening economic activities through small medium Enterprise.
Speaking to this medium, the Chief Administrator of Port Loko District Council, Mr. Alhaji Bangura who also double as the Coordinator of the project, said that the project is design mainly to complement government’s efforts in developing communities through decentralization. He said that the project will construct and rehabilitate WASH facilities in schools, Peripheral Health Units (PHU) in communities, and establish functional waste collection #facilities in the form of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).
The coordinator emphasized the significant of relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the project.
He said that after completion of the project, it would alleviate poverty and mitigate environmental degradation; improve hygiene and sanitation and infrastructural development; and boost education and health sectors.
