Cabinet Investigates Hastings Land Claims

The Government of Sierra Leone has set up a cabinet Sub-committee to investigate claims by individuals and corporate bodies to ownership of a piece land in and around the Hastings Airfield, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation said in a statement it put out on Monday 5 September 2022.

This came after it was alleged that the authorities have apparently leased the said land to Aquila, a foreign company, for the establishment of a gold processing facility and an airport. This plot of land had also been allotted to a Company operated by a Lebanese businessman for the establishment of a factory processing cement.

“The attention of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has been drawn to claims and counter claims by individuals and corporate bodies to ownership of piece and parcels of Land in and around the Hastings Airfield. The general public is hereby informed that the Government has set up a Cabinet Sub-committee chaired by the Chief Minister to investigate all such claims for Cabinet consideration,” the Transport Ministry said in the statement.

“Consequently, all those person(s) that are currently engaged in developing any portion of the piece and parcels of the Hastings Airfield should suspend all such works/activities until the Sub-committee submits its Report and decisions taken thereon by the Cabinet.”

The Government of Sierra Leone said that requested for all claimants to any piece and parcel of Land at the Hastings Airfield to submit their relevant documents to the Minster of Lands, Housing and Country Planning.
