The Parliament of Sierra Leone on Monday, December 19, 2022 passed into law the Bill entitled: “The Local Government Act of 2022”, to strengthen and enhance local government and rural development in the country.
The Bill is seeks to provide for the continuation of local councils, the decentralization and devolution of functions, powers and services to local councils, and to repeal and replace the Local Government Act of 2004 for the development of Sierra Leone.
The Bill went through several consultations, intensive debate and amendments before it was passed into law.
At Committee of the Whole House, the Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh presented the Report of the said Committee regarding effective scrutiny and certain amendments to be adopted by Parliament before passage into law.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Amb. Tamba Lamina piloted the Bill before enactment by Parliament.
