Accountant on Remand for Degree Scam

Abdulai Turay an Accountant working for a Chinese Company call CGC situated in Guinea Forechariah was yesterday sent to prison by Magistrate Mark Ngegba for allegedly obtaining NLe 7, 000 from Abibatu Tarawalie and Jonathan Daniel Kamara on the pretext that he will help them get a master’s degree at Ngaja University.

The accused is charge with two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses contrary to Section 32 (1) of the Larceny Act 1916.

According to the chargesheet, on count 1, the accused Abdulai Turay between the February 1, to March  31 2023, at Freetown, with intent to defraud obtained the sum of NLe4,000 from Abibatu Tarawalie by falsely pretending that he would offer her a scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree at Njala University, known  it to be false.

Police alleged on count 2 that, the accused on the same date and place with intent to defraud obtained the sum of NLe3,000 from Jonathan Daniel Kamara by falsely pretending that he would offer him a scholarship to pursue his master’s degree at Njala University, which is known to be false.

When the charges were put to the accused, he pleaded not guilty, and no legal representation was made on his behalf.

Magistrate Ngegba however, remanded the accused until May 23, 2023,when the matter will come up for hearing.
