The Eminent Women Peace Mediators- SL have in a statement it put out on Monday 26TH June 2023 called for calm as Sierra Leoneans await the announcement of the final official results of the multi-tier elections held on Saturday June 24th 2023.
In the statement the women also congratulated Sierra Leoneans for turning out in large numbers to vote during the polls, but advised all to remain calm, patient and respectful of the electoral processes as the nation anxiously awaits the announcement of official election results by the Chief Electoral Commissioner, ECSL.
In the statement the female mediators recognized and acknowledged the anticipation and emotions ahead of the final results. They pleaded thus: “we must remember that violence and unrest will only undermine peaceful coexistence. We therefore encourage patience and peaceful dialogue among stakeholders to protect our hard-earned peace and democracy. We encourage all political leaders, candidates, supporters, and citizens to demonstrate maturity, restraint, and respect for the rule of law.” The women also advised that all disputes or concerns regarding the electoral process should be addressed through legal channels and established mechanisms. They called upon the security forces to maintain professionalism, neutrality, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties, and for the media to be responsible in reporting by adhering to ethical standards and avoiding sensationalism or the spread of unverified information. “Accurate and balanced reporting plays a crucial role in fostering a calm and informed public discourse. We extend our gratitude to the international community,” they said. The women also went on to show gratitude to observers- both national and international, and partners who have supported Sierra Leone throughout its democratic journey saying that their continued engagement and support were crucial in upholding the democratic values we hold dear. “Let us remember that our strength lies in our unity as Sierra Leoneans. Regardless of our political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, or social status, we are all bound by our shared aspirations for a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive Sierra Leone,” the statement concluded.
