Ban on boats will impact fish supply

By George M.O. Williams

As predicted a decrease in the volume of catches due to a ban imposed by the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), prohibiting boats or canoes from berthing at wharves after 7:00 pm. The ban is set to take effect on September 1, 2023, and it has left many artisanal fishermen disappointed.

Turay emphasized that fishermen are not a threat to national peace; rather, they act as watchdogs on the sea. He pointed out that while fishing, they can report any suspected threats they observe.

This decision comes after the SLP issued a press release dated August 29, 2023, indicating that, following discussions with key stakeholders in the fishing sector and credible intelligence, there are indications that some unscrupulous individuals are planning to exploit wharves at night for clandestine activities.

Turay also highlighted that the ban on canoes and local boats will have a domino effect on fishing activities, as they usually have significant fish catches after 7 pm, the time specified by the Sierra Leone Police. He further noted that the ban might compel local fishermen to fish in neighboring countries, ultimately affecting the fish supply to the market. He appealed to the SLP to reconsider the specified time.

The SLP acknowledged that although activities at the wharves support the transportation and fishing sectors, unregulated operations at night could have severe security implications. The press release emphasized that the SLP, in collaboration with other relevant government entities, will enhance monitoring and security checks at all wharves nationwide. The SLP urged strict compliance, warning that those who fail to adhere to the ban would face legal consequences.

The concerns raised by Turay underscore the delicate balance between security considerations and the livelihoods of local fishermen. The SLP’s decision seeks to ensure security while recognizing the potential impact on the fishing industry. Balancing these aspects will be crucial in implementing effective measures that uphold safety and support the needs of the fishing community.
