Freetown, Sierra Leone – Luckman Koroma, a second-year student at Njala University’s Monkonday campus, has been denied bail for the second time in a case involving the unlawful killing of Mohamed Kamara. Magistrate Sahr Kekura ordered Koroma to remain in custody after his court appearance on Monday, September 2, 2024.

Koroma faces charges of motor manslaughter following an incident on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Cole Farm Junction, Wilkinson Road, Freetown. According to the charge sheet, Koroma was driving a vehicle with registration number ARD 999, a Toyota FJ Cruiser, when he allegedly caused the death of Kamara.

During the court proceedings, Police Inspector Sellu Tap informed the court that the prosecution’s witness was present but requested an adjournment to allow time for a conference with the witness.

Defense Counsel Jessie Munda Jengo applied for bail on behalf of Koroma under Section 79(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 32 of 1965. Jengo argued that Koroma is a Sierra Leonean resident with reliable sureties who could vouch for him. He further assured the court that Koroma would not interfere with prosecution witnesses if granted bail, emphasizing that the incident was an accident.

Despite the defense’s plea, Magistrate Kekura refused bail and remanded Koroma in prison. The case has been adjourned until September 9, 2024, for further hearings
