Mary Yei Yongai, a renowned Sierra Leonean makeup artist from Freetown, has achieved global recognition by breaking the Guinness World Record for the “Most Cosmetic Makeovers by One Artist in 24 Hours.” Yongai made history by applying makeup on 111 individuals, surpassing the previous record set by Martha Tilaar in 2005.

The Guinness World Records Team officially confirmed her achievement on September 17, 2024, announcing, “We are thrilled to inform you that your application for the most cosmetic makeovers in 24 hours has been successful. Congratulations, you are officially amazing!”

Yongai’s journey to breaking the record began on February 4, 2024, when she received approval from Guinness to attempt the feat. Reflecting on the accomplishment, she attributed her success to the collective efforts of her community, stating, “One stick cannot make a forest. I had the backing of many Sierra Leoneans. Breaking this record is a victory for all of us.”

She also encouraged others to pursue their ambitions, adding, “If individuals can achieve remarkable things for their countries, Sierra Leone can too. With God’s blessings and your support, this victory belongs to our beloved nation. Thank you all for being part of this journey. I love you all.”

In addition to her makeup career, Yongai is currently a third-year student at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications with a focus on Broadcast Journalism.

Makeup artistry plays a significant role in shaping personal and professional images in today’s society, often symbolizing social status and boosting self-confidence. This profession is integral to industries such as fashion, film, and photography.

The Guinness World Records, first published in 1955, serves as the ultimate reference for human achievements and natural world extremes. The record book has evolved to celebrate individual and collective accomplishments across a wide variety of categories, from culinary feats to cosmetic artistry.

Yongai’s groundbreaking achievement marks a proud moment for Sierra Leone and inspires others to aim for greatness.
