Among them are two remarkable widows, Mary Conteh and Isatu Kargbo, whose inspiring journeys highlight the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
A New Dawn for Mary Conteh
Mary Conteh hails from Kapeteh, a village near Binkolo, where her life took a dramatic turn after the death of her husband. With no formal education and limited resources, Mary faced the daunting challenge of supporting her ten dependents. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, she embraced the role of breadwinner through stone mining and crushing.
Every day, Mary rises with the sun, buying truckloads of boulders and processing them into gravel for sale along Sir Samuel Lewis Road. “I do not sell at a permanent price,” she explains, demonstrating her keen understanding of the marketplace and her willingness to negotiate to put food on the table. Her hard work not only sustains her family but also empowers her children and grandchildren, giving them opportunities she never had.
Mary’s journey is a testament to her extraordinary resilience. “I may not have had an education, but my children will,” she asserts, embodying the hope and determination of a mother who refuses to let her past dictate her family’s future.
Isatu Kargbo: Rising from the Ashes
Isatu Kargbo’s story is equally inspiring. After losing her husband during the war, she found herself homeless and struggling to care for her children. Yet, like Mary, Isatu refused to be defeated. She discovered stone mining as a means to provide for her family, transforming her life through sheer grit and perseverance.
Today, Isatu manages to send her daughter to a private school, a feat that many in her community can only dream of. “Though I sell cement blocks, I cannot afford to build a proper house,” she reflects, illustrating the sacrifices she continues to make for her family. After 21 years in the business, Isatu has even built a home for her widowed mother, showcasing her commitment to family and community.

Mary and Isatu’s experiences reflect a significant shift in societal norms in Sierra Leone.
