Jazz Sensation Tamara Lukasheva Lights Up Ballanta Academy with Electrifying Performance

On Friday, October 4, 2024, the Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts came alive with an unforgettable night of jazz as internationally acclaimed singer-pianist Tamara Lukasheva delivered a mesmerizing performance alongside the Academy’s own jazz band, Groovy Colours.

In a unique event sponsored by the German Embassy, Lukasheva’s extraordinary talents blended seamlessly with the local band, thrilling audiences with an evening of exhilarating jazz improvisation. This rare collaboration offered music lovers in Freetown a chance to witness the fusion of global talent and local artistry.

The night before, Lukasheva had set the stage with a private performance at the residence of Ambassador Jens Kraus-Massé, celebrating the 34th anniversary of German unification. The intimate performance showcased her vocal prowess, setting the tone for the dynamic jam session at Ballanta Academy.

Originally from Ukraine and now based in Cologne, Germany, Lukasheva is renowned for her powerful voice, evocative storytelling, and jazz improvisation skills. Her international career has earned her widespread recognition and numerous awards, with performances scheduled across Europe this year.

During the session with Groovy Colours, led by David Solomon Koroma, a.k.a. Double King, Lukasheva captivated the audience with her vocal improvisations, transforming classics like Fly Me to the Moon and Autumn Leaves with fresh scat melodies and daring musical exploration. A standout moment came when she mimicked the sound of a brass instrument with her voice, leaving the audience spellbound.
