Senegal, 23 October 2024 — Sierra Leone’s U-17 national team, Sierra Stars, began their WAFU Zone A U-17 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mali. The match, played at the Stade Lat Dior stadium in Senegal, saw Mali secure victory with an early goal from Seydou Dembele in the 8th minute.

Despite the loss and an ongoing age controversy surrounding the tournament, Sierra Stars fought hard but were unable to break through Mali’s defensive line. Mali dominated much of the match, showcasing their talent and keeping Sierra Leone’s team on the back foot.

Sierra Leone now faces the challenge of regrouping ahead of their second match against Mauritania on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Head Coach John Dominic Konneh expressed optimism about the upcoming fixture, stating, “We are confident of registering our first three points against Mauritania, which will motivate the boys for the final match.”

Reflecting on the loss to Mali, Konneh acknowledged the early goal but praised his players for their resilience, adding that they would make the necessary adjustments ahead of their next match.

Mali will continue their campaign with matches against Guinea Bissau and Mauritania, while Sierra Leone will look to bounce back and keep their qualification hopes alive.
