Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts (BAMPA) will host a landmark event, “An Evening with KFD,” on Friday, November 8, 2024, at the Logie Wright Auditorium on Liverpool Street. This event, featuring prominent figures in Sierra Leone’s art world, is part of the Academy’s 30th-anniversary celebration and aims to highlight the resilience, passion, and dedication of local artists.

Led by Dr. Kitty Fadlu-Deen (KFD), a revered figure in Sierra Leonean arts, the evening will showcase artists like Ali Conteh, Nafisatu Thullah, Oumar Farouk Sesay, Sajoh Jalloh, and the duo of Derek and Dericka Atere-Roberts, among others. Dr. Kitty will share their stories and celebrate their journeys, providing insight into the country’s evolving artistic landscape. “Despite limited central support, artists here are pushing boundaries, often without recognition,” Dr. Kitty noted.

Addressing key challenges faced by local artists, including undervaluation and financial instability, Dr. Kitty advocated for greater community and institutional support. “Our society must value artistic contributions with fair compensation, whether in music, visual arts, or performance,” she emphasized, stressing the importance of art education in schools to nurture talent and sustain appreciation for the arts.

The event aims to bring Sierra Leonean arts to the forefront, offering audiences a chance to connect with and support local artists. Through “An Evening with KFD,” the Ballanta Academy seeks to create a platform for Sierra Leone’s cultural voices, empowering them to share their work and inspiring more widespread recognition and support for the arts.
