John Capps-Jenner, a British-born cricket coach, arrived in Sierra Leone on Sunday, January 12, 2025, as a volunteer to help develop cricket in the country.
According to Francis Samura, the Chairman of Cricket Sierra Leone, Capps-Jenner is dedicating his time to support underprivileged cricket players in Sierra Leone. These players lack the resources and facilities available to their counterparts in developed countries such as Australia, England, India, and South Africa. Samura emphasized that Sierra Leone is fortunate to be one of the countries Capps-Jenner has chosen to assist.
Capps-Jenner, a former cricket player, has coached in countries like Bangladesh, India, and many others around the world. He arrived in Sierra Leone with cricket equipment, which he will use to train both coaches and players. While in Sierra Leone, he will work with various local coaches to train both male and female players, aiming to improve their skills in the game.
Samura highlighted that the arrival of the foreign coach is timely, as the Women’s National Team is currently preparing to participate in the Nigeria Women’s T20 Invitational Tournament in Abuja in March 2025. Additionally, the U-19 Men’s National Team will travel to Lagos at the end of March to take part in the ICC U-17 W/C Division 1 qualifier.
Besides preparing the two teams, Capps-Jenner will also organize coaching clinics to train local coaches and school teachers, helping to promote cricket in schools and communities. He is expected to hold meetings with the board today or tomorrow and will start his work immediately.
