To intertwine healthy living with cultural expression, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, and Leone Diamond Entertainment, recently hosted an energetic “Dance for Health” event at Gigibonta Car Park in Freetown. The occasion attracted a lively mix of Sierra Leoneans and international visitors, showcasing the harmonious blend of traditional dance, physical fitness, and community involvement.
The initiative was led by Minister Nabeela Farida Tunis and Isata Sawi, the Chief Executive Officer of Leone Diamond Entertainment. It aimed at spotlight dance not only as a cherished cultural art form but also as a vital means of enhancing physical and mental wellness. As part of the broader 2025 Year of Ecotourism campaign, the event underscored the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism, public health, and community engagement.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, participants of all ages engaged in dynamic dance workouts, invigorating fitness routines, acrobatic displays, and friendly dance battles. The event provided a unique and enjoyable platform for educating the public on the importance of regular exercise, particularly through culturally meaningful activities that resonate deeply with Sierra Leoneans.
Minister Tunis praised the enthusiastic turnout and spirited participation, noting the comprehensive benefits of cultural tourism. “Tourism is more than just visiting beautiful locations; it’s about the experiences that enrich our well-being. Dance is a key part of Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage, and this event perfectly merges fitness with tradition,” she commented. CEO Sawi echoed similar sentiments, highlighting dance’s universal appeal as a language that unites people and promotes both physical and mental health. “This initiative shows that dance transcends entertainment—it serves as therapy, exercise, and a powerful medium for cultural pride. We are excited to see so many people embrace this movement,” she added.
Performer Amadu Kamara from Grafton expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by the event. He noted that it allowed him to connect with diverse audiences and learn new skills and insights. “Programs like this are exactly what we need in our country. They have the power to advance our art, creative, and tourism sectors,” Kamara remarked.
The success of the “Dance for Health” event was made possible with the robust support of local fitness groups, cultural performers, and wellness advocates. Special accolades were extended to Grafton and the Sierra Leone Gymnasts, whose awe-inspiring acrobatic performances elevated the excitement of the day.
The Ministry reiterated its dedication to leveraging tourism as a catalyst for national development by planning more events that integrate health, culture, and economic growth. Following the triumph of this initiative, plans are already underway to roll out similar events in other regions of Sierra Leone, ensuring even broader community engagement. This endeavor aligns with the government’s long-term strategy to position Sierra Leone as a premier destination for cultural tourism and wellness retreats.
Through initiatives like these, the Ministry of Tourism and its partners are not only preserving and celebrating the nation’s rich cultural traditions but also promoting a healthier, more connected society.
