After steering his party through two election victories, Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq. is regarded as one of the most successful Secretary Generals of the grand old Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). When he decisively defeated his main contenders to become SLPP Secretary General in 2017, not many were optimistic about his administrative and political skills to handle the affairs of a party beset with internal power struggles. This year, Umaru Napoleon Koroma will exit his position as National Secretary General of the ruling SLPP. Here, we look back at his journey so far.
From Lawyer to Politician
When asked about his feelings upon being elected National Secretary General of the SLPP, Koroma reflects on his journey from law to politics. “As a lawyer, I was building my career but was caught between practicing for a living and supporting the party by representing many SLPP supporters in court,” he said. His involvement in the legal issues faced by the party around 2014 and 2015 built up momentum and expanded his interest in politics. Eventually, he led the new legal team for the party.
Rising Through the Ranks
Koroma acknowledges that his youth and perceived inexperience initially raised doubts. He recalled a pivotal moment when three elderly party members encouraged him to run for the position of Secretary General. Despite initial hesitation, he consulted with colleagues and elders, eventually deciding to run. “Contest against those heavyweights and well-experienced folks in the political game, like Rado Swarray, Kalilu Tutangi, and Brima Koroma was no child’s play,” he noted.
Overcoming Challenges
Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Koroma emphasized the difficulty of transitioning from opposition to governing party. He had to make tough decisions regarding candidate selection for parliamentary elections, which often led to accusations and personal attacks. “The most important thing is how you manage people’s expectations,” he said.
Future Plans
As his tenure comes to an end, Koroma has made a personal decision to step down after eight years, although he does not rule out future possibilities. “It is always good to leave the stage when the music is sweetest,” he remarked.
Major Highlights
Koroma is proud of his contributions to the party and the nation, particularly his role in electing the president and revising the party’s constitution. The new constitution established the Young Generation Council and the Women’s Council, empowering young professionals and women within the party.
Lessons from President Bio
Koroma expressed admiration for President Julius Maada Bio’s patience, humility, and focus on human welfare. “One of the greatest lessons I learned from President Bio is the power of letting something go,” he said.
Advice for Other Political Parties
Koroma believes political parties must be serious and honest about their intentions, as their leadership reflects on the people they govern. “The first thing they have to learn is to organize themselves properly,” he advised.
Conclusion
Umaru Napoleon Koroma’s eight-year tenure as SLPP Secretary General has been marked by significant achievements and challenges. As he steps down, his contributions to the party and the nation will be remembered, and his future endeavors eagerly anticipated.
