Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (SLTSC) has announced the launch of a National Teacher Registration Exercise in line with its mandate as stated in the 2011 TSC Act, TSC said in a statement on Friday.
This compulsory registration will begin on Friday, March 14, 2025, and end on Monday, March 31, 2025. During this period, carefully selected focal persons will visit schools across the country to collect data on individuals currently delivering teaching services.
This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring a well-regulated and professional teacher workforce that aligns with national education goals and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4c. The registration process will encompass all individuals providing teaching services in classrooms across the country, both in public and private Pre/Primary, Junior Secondary, Senior Secondary, and Technical/Vocational schools.
The primary objective of this exercise is to establish a comprehensive database of all teachers in the country, facilitating better workforce planning, deployment, and succession management. This will guide the Commission’s efforts towards equitable distribution of qualified teachers across all regions, particularly in underserved and remote areas, thereby improving learning outcomes.
The SLTSC urges all individuals currently engaged in classroom teaching, whether on the government payroll or not, in public or private schools, to participate in this compulsory registration exercise within the stipulated timeframe. Teachers are expected to be in their current duty stations with all relevant documents:
Teachers on Payroll: Qualification certificates, Birth Certificates of Children, National ID Card, NASSIT Card, Bank Details, and Letter of Appointment (if any).
Teachers not on Payroll: Qualification certificates, Birth Certificates of Children, National ID Card.
All teachers who have previously registered with the Teaching Service Commission are exempt from this compulsory registration. It is mandatory for all teachers to be registered; otherwise, they will not be allowed in the classroom.
