Statistician General Represents Sierra Leone at 56th Session of UN Statistical Commission

Stats SL’s Temporary Headquarters, 1B King Street, Kona Lodge, Freetown February 28, 2025: Andrew Bob Johnny, the Statistician General of Sierra Leone, has departed the country to participate in the 56th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, scheduled to take place from March 4 to 7, 2025, in New York, USA.

This annual gathering brings together global statistical leaders to discuss pressing issues such as data governance, national accounts, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicator framework, population and housing censuses, and food security and nutrition.

This year’s session is especially significant as it features a High-Level Forum on Official Statistics on March 3, focusing on the critical topic of data governance. Additionally, a special seminar on emerging issues, scheduled for February 28, will explore strategies for building statistical capacity worldwide.

In the lead-up to the event, a series of virtual side events have been organized under the theme “Road to the Statistical Commission.” These discussions aim to set the stage for key deliberations at the main session.

The Statistician General is expected to engage in high-level discussions and contribute to enhancing global statistical standards that will influence national development policies.

As Sierra Leone prepares for its decennial population and housing census, the Statistician General is accompanied in New York by the Director of Censuses and GIS, Abdulai Brima, and the Director of Data Science, Theophilus Blaudfaust. It is hoped that critical meetings with international partners and other census bodies will put Sierra Leone on a firm footing to kick off the 2030 global round of censuses.
