Freetown, Sierra Leone – Friday, 21st March 2025: In a remarkable move towards fostering sustainable forestry in Sierra Leone, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), supported by funding from the European Union, handed over four Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop vehicles to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC). This initiative highlights the European Union’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation in the country.
The vehicles will enhance the Ministry’s capacity to monitor forestry activities, promote reforestation, and support policies that safeguard Sierra Leone’s biodiversity. The ceremonial event was held at the Ministry’s headquarters on Wilkinson Road, Freetown, and was attended by representatives from the European Union, FAO, key stakeholders, and the media.
Saeed Abubakar Bancie, FAO Representative in Sierra Leone, stated, “The provision of these vehicles is a testament to the collaborative effort between the EU, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and FAO in addressing challenges posed by deforestation and climate change. These vehicles will enable field officers to carry out their work more efficiently, directly contributing to the sustainable management of our forest resources. Together, we are paving the way for a greener future for Sierra Leone.”
Echoing this sentiment, Elizabeth Hawa Ellie, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized, “We are immensely grateful for the continued support from the European Union and FAO. These vehicles are not just machines; they symbolize our commitment to the sustainable development of our forestry sector. They will enhance our capacity to enforce regulations, protect our forests, and engage with local communities in collaborative conservation efforts. This support is vital for our environment and people’s wellbeing.”
Gerald Halter, First Counsellor and Head of Cooperation at the EU delegation to Sierra Leone, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment, stating, “By enhancing the capacity of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, we are not just investing in vehicles; we are investing in the future of Sierra Leone’s forests and the well-being of its people.”
This initiative underlines the joint efforts of FAO, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the European Union in advancing sustainable forestry management and ensuring the protection of Sierra Leone’s natural resources for future generations.
