The Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts (BAMPA), a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage, is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary with an electrifying event, the “SSSalsa Party.” Scheduled to take place over four nights from April 11 to 17, 2025, this vibrant celebration promises an unforgettable fusion of salsa rhythms, engaging dance lessons, and the infectious energy of UK-based DJ Showers, founder of the SS5 parties.
Known for his dynamic presence, DJ Showers will lead salsa classes and performances, blending Afro-Cuban and Latin American musical influences with strong percussion, syncopated beats, and melodic brass sections. BAMPA’s management expressed their enthusiasm, encouraging dance enthusiasts to sign up for classes priced affordably at NLE 150 for a single session and NLE 500 for four sessions. Food and drinks will be available at reasonable prices, fostering a convivial and accessible atmosphere for all attendees.
Beyond the joy of dancing, the event serves a greater purpose. Proceeds from the “SSSalsa Party” will be directed toward purchasing solar panels for the academy, highlighting BAMPA’s commitment to sustainability and enhancing its learning environment. This initiative adds a layer of social responsibility, transforming the celebration into a community-driven effort to support the academy’s mission.
BAMPA, founded to provide formal music education, has played an essential role in nurturing musical talent and promoting performing arts in Sierra Leone for three decades. Located in Freetown and Port Loko, the academy offers comprehensive training in various musical disciplines, including instrumental performance, vocal training, and music theory. Lessons cover a wide range of styles, from classical to contemporary and African music, with students learning instruments such as piano, guitar, saxophone, and traditional African drums.
Expanding beyond music, BAMPA fosters artistic expression through dance, drama, and cultural events. The institution regularly organizes concerts, recitals, and workshops, providing students with opportunities to engage with live performances. BAMPA’s dedication to social change is evident in its programs that connect with the wider community.
As BAMPA marks its 30th anniversary, the “SSSalsa Party” stands as a celebration of the academy’s legacy of excellence and cultural enrichment. With music, dance, and a vibrant spirit, attendees can look forward to an unforgettable experience while contributing to a meaningful cause. This milestone reaffirms BAMPA’s position as a pillar of artistic and cultural development in Sierra Leone.
