Renowned Sierra Leonean artist Aruna Wahid Dumbuya, popularly known as Sir Wahid, was honored as the Best Legendary Artist at the 2025 Sierra Leone Association of Artists and Musicians (SLAAM) Awards. The prestigious event, held on Friday, April 4, 2025, celebrated individuals who have significantly contributed to Sierra Leone’s cultural and musical heritage. This year’s theme, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall,” emphasized the unifying power of art in shaping societal values.

Sir Wahid attributed his win to his single “Exiled,” which delves into themes of displacement and longing for home. “This track explores feelings of displacement and longing for home, while some of my other songs like ‘Amen’ and ‘Miracle’ showcase my musical versatility,” he said in an interview on April 7, 2025.

In an emotional acceptance speech, Wahid expressed his gratitude, dedicating the award to those who remain true to their roots. “This award is not just for me—it’s for everyone who believes in staying true to their roots no matter where life takes them. Sierra Leone lives in my heart and in my music,” he remarked. He also thanked the SLAAM organizers and his fans, saying, “This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my fans and Sierra Leoneans. Thank you all for believing in me.”

Sir Wahid’s decades-long career reflects a unique blend of traditional Sierra Leonean rhythms with global influences, earning him international acclaim and a loyal fan base. He first gained recognition as part of the musical group ‘Tin Dem’ before embarking on a successful solo career. His music, characterized by Afro R&B sounds and poignant social commentary, addresses issues such as crime, societal challenges, and displacement. Tracks like “Crime,” dedicated to Sierra Leone and his wife, a police officer, highlight his deep personal connections to his artistry. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he prioritized spreading messages of love and hope through his music.

Beyond his musical achievements, Sir Wahid is a dedicated advocate for human, women’s, and children’s rights. As a peace ambassador, he has been recognized for his efforts in promoting social justice and community development. He also serves as an entertainment consultant and is a board member for organizations including the Empire Arts Institute and the Legal Aid Board.

The SLAAM Awards aim to recognize Sierra Leonean artists and musicians who have made a profound impact on the creative industry both locally and internationally. Sir Wahid’s victory is not only a personal milestone but also a source of national pride, as it showcases the immense talent emerging from Sierra Leone.

As the country continues to gain recognition in the global music industry, accolades like these celebrate the contributions of artists like Sir Wahid, who exemplify artistic excellence and cultural advocacy.
