The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the timely completion of the ongoing renovation of the Siaka Stevens Stadium, Sierra Leone’s premier sports facility. Speaking during a special visit to the stadium on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Minister was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Works, the National Sports Authority, the National Olympic Committee, and the Sierra Leone Football Association.
During the visit, Madam James-Teima expressed gratitude to the Chinese construction firm, Ghanzou Company, for their transparency and cooperation, which enabled stakeholders and the public to monitor the rehabilitation project’s progress. “This stadium is a national treasure. We don’t have another facility of this standard, which is why it is so important to complete it to the highest quality,” she remarked. “My Ministry, along with the Ministry of Works, is committed to keeping the people of Sierra Leone informed about the developments.”
A Boost to National Pride and Football
Madam James-Teima emphasized the significance of completing the stadium, noting its vital role in boosting national pride and enabling Sierra Leone to host international football matches. She highlighted the negative impact of hosting games abroad on both team morale and national support. “When our Leone Stars play abroad, they lack the home support that inspires peak performance. Additionally, hosting matches at home helps boost the economy—from local vendors to employment opportunities,” she explained.
International Standards and Delays
One major element delaying the stadium’s completion is the installation of seats, a requirement mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). Madam James-Teima disclosed that bidding for the seating installation is underway. She reassured Sierra Leoneans that efforts are being made to address this critical issue and meet international standards. “Football is the biggest sport in our country. Without proper seating, we cannot meet international standards. We’ve re-engaged with our Chinese partners to ensure they understand the urgency, and we truly appreciate the Government of China for their continued support,” she added.
Looking Ahead
The Minister expressed confidence in the project’s progress and assured the nation that all efforts are being made to complete the stadium soon. “The Siaka Stevens Stadium is crucial for Sierra Leone, both in terms of football and national pride, and we are committed to bringing football back home,” she stated.
