Freetown, Sierra Leone—In a move that underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to global justice, the nation has proudly nominated Professor Charles C. Jalloh to serve as a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), solidifying its reputation as a champion of international law.
Professor Jalloh, widely regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s most accomplished legal minds, brings an impressive track record to the candidacy. Currently serving at the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC), he has been elected twice, achieving the highest vote of any African during his second election.
Expressing his gratitude, Jalloh stated, “I am very grateful to Sierra Leone for its support. Serving on the ICJ bench would be a profound honor and an opportunity to represent our country with distinction.”
The ICJ, which resolves disputes between nations, has a total of 15 judges, with Africa holding three slots. Should Professor Jalloh’s candidacy succeed, he would contribute to advancing peaceful solutions to global conflicts—a vision aligned with President Julius Maada Bio’s global agenda for peace and security.
Professor Jalloh’s illustrious career includes his role as Professor of International Law and the Richard A. Hausler Chair in Law at the University of Miami Law School. At the ILC, he serves as Special Rapporteur for the topic “Subsidiary means for the determination of rules of international law” and chairs the Working Group on Methods of Work and Procedures. He has held several leadership positions, such as Chairperson of the Drafting Committee, General Rapporteur, and Second-Vice Chair.
Now in his second five-year mandate at the ILC following re-election by the United Nations General Assembly in 2021, Jalloh continues to exemplify Sierra Leone’s excellence on the global stage. His nomination not only reflects his unwavering dedication to international justice but also enhances Sierra Leone’s reputation in promoting peace and security worldwide.
As Sierra Leone celebrates Professor Jalloh’s candidacy, citizens and officials alike hope to see his expertise and commitment to global justice recognized through his election to the ICJ bench.
