The Sierra Leone Cricket Association (SLCA) has on Monday July 13, 2020, registered seven Sierra Leoneans as candidates for the first level of the Africa Cricket Associations (ACA) coaching course. The candidates will go through a six-day course online due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The six-day coaching course started on Monday July 13, and will end on Monday July 20. It is part of the commitment and vision of ACA to capacitate coaches across the continent.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Sierra Leone Cricket Association, Aliue Bockarie, a total of about 93 cricket coaches across Africa are taking part in the ongoing course.
He said that for Sierra Leone, the online course is taking place at the Association’s office at the Siaka Steven Stadium in Freetown. The course is being monitored in Sierra Leone by Francis Samura, the CEO of the Sierra Leone Cricket Association.
He said that successful candidates will be certified by African Cricket Association.
According to Francis Samura, before the Coronavirus the international body used to send experts to different countries to conduct courses or vice versa.
The CEO revealed that, they have selected active players to do the course, because the continental association had insisted Cricketers at U-19 level be chosen as candidates for the course, adding that “besides, team captains act as coaches during matches.” He said that in Cricket, the captain does the talking on field placing and change bowlers, when the need arises. “After five days, the participants will take part in an online exam on Monday th July 20, 2020,” Samura said.
Among the seven participants are both male and female with two grassroots coaches. The participants include, Sarah Johnson and Seray Turay, the Captain and Assistant Captain for U-19 national team; Edward Ngegba and John Bangura, Captain and Assistant captains of senior female national team; Linda Bull, Aminata Kamara, and one former assistant captain, Ann Marie Kamara.
