Sierra Leone: Paramount Chieftaincy Elections to be conducted next month

Newman Combey, Director of Local Government, has recently said that out of fifty-seven vacancies, nineteen Paramount Chieftaincy elections will be conducted across the country next month.

NEC and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development have scheduled the coming Chieftaincy elections into groups, the first tranche which will cover 19 Chiefdoms in Pujehun, Moyamba, Falaba, Koinadugu, Karene, Tonkolili, Bo, Kambia, and Bombali. The vacancies occurred due to deaths and de-amalgamation of Chiefdoms.

Out of 52 de-amalgamated Chiefdoms created by the previous, the North alone has 37 new Chiefdoms. The South and East put together have only four new Chiefdoms.

Two new districts were also created in the North. The two new districts are Falaba and Karene.

The process of electing new Paramount Chiefs will start with the revision of Tribal Authorities’ List, declaration of rights and polling.

The remaining thirty-seven Paramount Chieftaincy elections are expected to be conducted next year, according to Mr. Newman Combey.
