Sierra Leone: NOC Sec. Gen. lectures budding athletes on anti-doping

Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) in Sierra Leone, Joseph Nyande, recently delivered a lecture to young athletes from various schools on Anti-Doping.

Nyande, who is a member of the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) and the World Anti-Doping Organization (WADO), lectured the young athletes about drugs that the international sports bodies frown at.

These drugs, he said are the drugs that give extra energy or accelerate the performance of an athlete during competitions. Some athletes, he said inject anabolic steroid to enhance extra energy to them during trainings and competitions.

For female athletes, he said they inject, certain genes into their system which change their structure and make them develop masculine features.

These drugs, he said, have their advantages and disadvantages to the body. He said that at times it makes athletes to be fast when running, but gives you energy to do boxing, weightlifting and several other sports. The dangerous side to the body, he said is that it makes the individual gives out more Carbon dioxide, than take in more oxygen,  which he said leads some athletes to collapse after finishing races.

He went on that International Sporting Organizations like Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, Islamic Games, All Africa Games and several others test athletes before or after an event.

Those tested positive will be ban for some years or forever. Beside the ban, he said it will be a disgrace to the individual, the family and the country where he or she is coming from.

In this case, he told the young athletes to be mindful of the substance and the drugs they take. He advised all athletes to seek medical advice whenever they want to take drug when they are sick.

The young athletes were also taught on the effect of coronavirus and how to prevent it.
