Sierra Leone: Businessman testifies in case of larceny

Alhaji Musa of No. 1A Johnson Street, Aberdeen, Freetown, on Wednesday December 9, 2020, testified in the ongoing matter of Larceny at the Ross Road Magistrate Court no 1 which is presided by Magistrate Alhaji Sulayman Koroma.

In his testimony, Mr Johnson told the court that he is businessman who deals in petrol and the accused used to be his employee. He said that on Tuesday October 6, 2020, he received text messages from the accused intimating him that he had recorded some cash losses but that he would try and replace the missing sum. He added that he later went to the place of business and upon his arrival at his business place; he found out that the sum of Le 3,627,000 instead of Le 8,879,000 which the accused was to account for was left with him.

Johnson told the court that on October 3, 2020, he entrusted the sum of Le 28, 950,000 to the said accused for the purpose of delivery, but later found part of the sum at the bottom of a barrel in the office with the sum of Le 10, 600,000 missing from the amount he had original entrusted to the accused for onward delivery. He said that a total amount of Le 15,700,000 was missing.

According to the complainant, the accused pleaded with him to give him some time to raise the said money, but to no avail, and that made him to report the matter at the Shell Police Post. The accused was charged with one count of Larceny by Servant contrary to section 17(1) of the Larceny Act 1916.

The police charge sheet states that the accused on October 6, 2020, being a clerk or servant stole the sum of Le 15,700,000 from Alhaji Musa.

The matter was adjourned to December 16, 2020.
