Sierra Leone: WAYout recounts recent achievements

Gibrilla Kamara commonly known as Gibo, the manager of WAYout Sierra Leone, has on Saturday January 2, 2021 disclosed to Premier News that, the organization has recently made lots of achievements in Sierra Leone with the efforts of its member.

Kamara said that in a national poetry competition organized recently by the Anti-Corruption and AYV, Alhaji Kondeh, a poet from WAYout took the first position with a price of Le50,000,000 with his poem titled ‘Corruption.’

He explained, “‘Bread ’n’ Butter’, a song which was composed by Mash P., a musician of the organization, has been recently selected for International Music Video Awards in London, a video which was shot by Josta Hopps. This is in recognition of WAYout’s talent and all these are honors to Sierra Leone specifically WAYout.”

He furthered that, WAYout has three films that are getting into International film festivals this year. They are titled ‘the Return’,  documentary about an ex-child soldier going back to apologize after 17 years in a battle field, directed by Alusine Kamara; Homeless, a poem in which 17 WAYout poets came together and wrote about homelessness which has been in movie festivals in Mexico, USA and Portugal; and ‘Abused’, a documentary about domestic abuse in the provinces.

He said that after the documentary about domestic violence, they were able to establish a Women’s Media Group which has received funds to build the group, train more young women in filmmaking and produce films about sexual health, gender preference and women’s rights.

WAYout is a non-profitable organization with the aims of giving opportunities to less privileged and disadvantaged youths in the streets, societies, communities and slums areas to realize their dreams through music making, film making and arts.

He said that as an organization they have trained youths on different skills that will enrich their lives. He referred to skills like: photo shooting, film editing and music making and more.

Kamara said that the organization is not only promoting youths through music and film makings, but also has a poetry group which has produced two books since the organization was started.

Kamara said that, they also give support to female inmates in correctional centres in Sierra Leone.
