Sierra Leone: Man arraigned for fraudulently converting motorbike

On Friday December 4, 2020 at Aberdeen roundabout, police alleged that Mohamed Mansaray fraudulently converted to his own use one Apache motorbike valued at Le18 million which was entrusted to him by Ibrahim Sorie Dumbuya for the purpose of commercial bike riding.

Mohamed Mansaray was arraigned before Magistrate Marke Ngegba on a count charge of fraudulent conversion contrary to section 20 (1) (iv)(a) of the Larceny Act 1916.

Prosecution witness and complainant Ibrahim Sorie Dumbuya, recognized the accused person as his friend to whom he entrusted his motorbike.

He recalled that on the 4th of December 2020, the accused met him and informed him that his friend had hired him to go out with the bike on a chartered trip.

He said he told the accused to return with the bike at around 10: 00 p.m. after the trip. He added that while he was at his posting at Aberdeen, the accused gave him a call informing him that the bike had been stolen.

He added that when he asked the accused where the motorbike had been stolen, and he told him Dwarzack at the back of Winners Chapel. He said he told the accused to wait on him at Congo Cross.

Dumbuya furthered that he met the accused at Congo Cross and went to Aberdeen Police Station and made a report.

He said the next day he had to call the man whom the accused alleged had stolen the bike, but the person told him that he did not want to talk to him but the himself.

He said while the man was speaking on the phone with the accused, the accused told him that he was in police custody because of the motorbike and if the man availed himself he would be freed.

Dumbuya revealed that the man told the accused to send Le 300,000 via his Orange money before he could release the motorbike. He said he gave the accused the money and he sent it.

Dumbuya said the man asked him to meet him at Sackville Street, and he did but couldn’t see the man there and up till then he had not received his motorbike.

Magistrate Marke Ngegba sent the accused on remand at the Male Correctional Facility on Pademba Road, and he adjourned the matter to January 21, 2021.
