OlympAfrica Centre, a sports project which is been implemented under the National Olympic Committee, which aims at developing the potential of kids in sports within Sierra Leone, is presently engaged in a one-month sports training activities titled FutbolNet at their centre in Goderich.
The training commenced on December 29, 2020 and will end on January 29, 2021.
Director of OlympAfrica Centre Sierra Leone, Frank Turay, told Premier News that the training is geared towards reactivating the skills of the kids in various sporting disciplines, after the lull in sporting activities occasioned by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
He noted that they had been preparing for the FutbolNet competition when the Coronavirus, hit Sierra Leone, causing the Government of Sierra Leone to put a ban on all sporting activities in the country. He continued that this derailed their activities as children had to avoid being involved in sports for months which brought deterioration in the level of their skills and physical fitness, “but nevertheless we are back and are ready to work with the kids”.
He further stated that because of the above, OlympAfrica decided to fund few countries to organize the training for kids to refresh their skills on the various sports.
“Due to our hard work, Sierra Leone was fortunate to be among the few countries that were chosen by the international body to benefit,” he commented.
He concluded that children will be trained in Football and Basketball, noting that because of COVID19 rules only few children were selected from various schools to take part in the activities.
He added that for football, coaches will train male and female kids on how to dribble and pass the ball; while in basketball the coaches will train the kids how to bounce the ball, do passes and shoot for the basket.
