Sierra Leone: Fifty-Fifty Group lauds three ladies of iron

The 50-50 Group of Sierra Leone, a group which advocates gender parity for women in the Country, has in a press statement dated 31st January 2021, lauded the efforts and achievements of three prominent women:  Justice Miatta Samba, Dr. Hannah Max-Kyne and Mrs. Lara Taylor Pearce,  for playing instrumental roles in Sierra Leone. 

The Group noted the efforts made over the years by the executive to support women who, on their own merit, aspired to decision making levels, and the appointment of women to decision making levels; and furthered that in its drive to increase women’s leadership across the board congratulates Justice Miatta Samba on her election and appointment as a Judge of the International Criminal Court.

“We are assured of her professionalism and exemplary performance that will pave the way for more women and raise the Green, White and Blue Flag even higher. The 50/50 group expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Sierra Leone for their support throughout the process; this shows there is much to achieve when we are united together as a country,” the statement read.

The Group also expressed congratulations to the New NACSA Commissioner, Dr. Hannah Max- Kyne, who the Group insists has exemplary professional credentials and knows will serve with great humility and professionalism.

In the statement, 50-50 Sierra Leone also applauded the continued efforts of the Auditor General, Mrs. Lara Taylor Pearce,to build accountable systems in Sierra Leone. Addressing Mrs. Taylor-Pearce, the group gave the following touching remarks: “You will be remembered in history for your consistent show of professionalism in the discharge of your duties despite high levels of intimidation and harassment from some sections of the society.”

The Group went on to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to all women across the country from all sectors who are relentless in their efforts to ensure Sierra Leone achieved the SDGs and attain a middle income economy within the next ten years.

The Group said that it is pleased with the launch of the Gender and Women’s Empowerment Policy and hopes that government will ensure adequate resource allocation to realize its goals. It also called on the Government of Sierra Leone to exercise the necessary political will for the Policy to succeed.

“As we laud prominent women who are playing instrumental roles in our society, and the positive steps that the administration has taken so far, at the same time we know there is still much to do,” the group said, and further admitting that “the fight against gender-based violence, especially sexual violence against women and girls (children) is disturbing.”

The Group in conclusion acknowledged the contribution of men in the collective effort to minimize the increasing menace in society. “Special thanks to the men who initiated and participated in the walk ‘To end rape campaign,” the Group said.
