Freetown, Sierra Leone — in a powerful observance of Post-Mental Health Day, ARMeD SL, alongside key partners, gathered on Thursday, October 29, 2024, at the Approved School Complex in Freetown to highlight the urgent need for mental health support in workplaces across Sierra Leone. Under this year’s theme, “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” the event called for an integrated approach to mental well-being in both professional and community spaces.
Lucy Cecilia Lamin, Executive Director of ARMeD SL, addressed the significant mental health challenges faced by Sierra Leoneans, exacerbated by stress from disasters, health crises, and the rise of harmful substances like Kush. She urged Sierra Leoneans to foster a unified approach to mental health, stating, “Many struggle silently with mental health issues due to a lack of awareness; our streets, homes, and workplaces are affected, and it’s critical we bring attention to these unseen struggles.” She also thanked ARMeD SL’s partners, including the National Commission for Persons with Disability and the Ministry of Social Welfare, for their ongoing support.
Highlighting proactive mental health strategies, yoga practitioners Dr. Kitty Fadlu-Deen and Alusine Kamara from Sahaja Yoga Sierra Leone led attendees through meditation and breathing exercises, emphasizing the benefits of mindfulness for stress relief and mental clarity. Kamara and Dr. Fadlu-Deen encouraged participants to incorporate meditation into their daily routines, underscoring that mental well-being is as essential as physical health.
The event, attended by mental health professionals, community leaders, and individuals who shared testimonies of support, underscored ARMeD SL’s commitment to advancing mental health awareness and reducing stigma year-round in Sierra Leone.
