“Attorney General Takes Student to Court Over Alleged Cable Theft”

Freetown, Sierra Leone — Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Lamin Tarawally, has filed charges against Julian Jusu, a student, accusing him of stealing electrical cables valued at over NLe 25,000. Jusu appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2 on Thursday, November 15, 2024.

The accused faces two charges: larceny under Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916 and malicious damage under Section 51 of the Malicious Damage Act of 1861. According to police reports, Jusu allegedly stole and damaged nine rolls of 4 M.M.A.C cables and twelve rolls of 2.5 M.M cables on November 3, 2024, at Imatt in Freetown. The cables, valued at NLe 25,350, were said to be in the custody of Hassan Turay.

When the charges were read, Jusu pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Detective Police Constable 18235 Thoronka K.K. informed the court that witnesses were absent and requested an adjournment.

Magistrate Bangura denied bail, ordering Jusu to be remanded at the male correctional facility in Freetown. The case was adjourned to November 18, 2024, as the court awaits testimony from the prosecution’s witnesses.
