Justice Komba Kamanda, who presides at the ongoing trial for treason of Amadou Koita Makolo and others on Thursday 17th July 2024 admitted Bai Mamoud Bangura, to bail due to his worsening health condition.
Freetown, Sierra Leone — Bai Mamoud Bangura, the National Organising Secretary of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has been granted bail due to deteriorating health conditions.
The Judge decided to release Bangura on bail so he could receive urgent medical attention.
The proceedings for treason against him will continue, despite his release.
Bangura was arrested last November at his home by armed police in connection to an attempted coup.
According to Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, the arrest followed the discovery of military gear and evidence indicating the harboring of a suspected fugitive involved in the 26 November 2023 coup attempt at Bangura’s residence in Freetown.
The police operation, which took place on 30 November 2023, led to the detention of both Bangura and the alleged fugitive at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters for further investigation.
Minister Bah stated that the findings at Bangura’s residence were critical to the ongoing investigation into the attempted coup.
The APC National Organizing Secretary stands accused of several charges ranging from Treason, Misprison of Treason, Murder and Harbouring following the infamous November 26 2023 attempted failed coup against the Bio led government.
The trial judge, Justice Komba Kamanda noted in his ruling that the trial would continue while the former Minister of Youth Affairs has been allowed to go seek urgent medical attention abroad.
Bai Mahmoud Bangura is a Former Youth Aide President and immediate erstwhile President of the hitherto APC National Youth League who has been in detention for almost seven months before his release.
