Freetown, Sierra Leone — Back-to-back Sierra Leone Premier League champions, Bo Rangers, have publicly called on the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) to release their long-overdue prize money. Despite being crowned champions of the 2023/24 season on June 30, the club has yet to receive the financial rewards associated with their triumph.
Delayed Payment Stirs Concerns
Bo Rangers emphasized the critical importance of these funds for their operational needs and further development. The club pointed out that such delays impact their ability to function effectively, particularly after representing Sierra Leone on the continental stage.
The delay also raises questions about financial transparency and accountability within the SLFA, despite the association benefiting from a significant $80,000 sponsorship from Leone Rock Metal Group.
Uncertainty Surrounding the New Season
Adding to their frustration, the SLFA announced the start of the new Premier League season in November but has yet to release the fixtures, leaving clubs uncertain about preparations. The delay in addressing last season’s prize money further compounds the challenges faced by the teams.
Lack of Official Response
Efforts to reach the SLFA’s media department for a comment on the issue have been unsuccessful, leaving Bo Rangers and other stakeholders in the dark about when or if the prize money will be disbursed.
A Broader Issue
This situation underscores broader concerns about financial support and sustainability for clubs in Sierra Leone’s football ecosystem. Bo Rangers’ appeal highlights the pressing need for timely and transparent financial governance to ensure the growth and stability of the sport.
Bo Rangers, who have now claimed the title for the third time, continue to wait for clarity on their well-deserved reward as they prepare for another competitive season.
