On January 29, 2025, the Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL) organized a float parade in Makeni City, signaling the launch of the Salone Payment Switch Instant Payment Platform.
The event, which followed similar parades held in Bo and Kenema, aimed to raise public awareness about the benefits and convenience of the innovative instant payment system.
The Instant Payment Platform is a revolutionary service that enables instant fund transfers across various banking and mobile payment platforms. This seamless integration allows individuals to send and receive money effortlessly between banks and mobile money services, promoting greater financial inclusion and accessibility for Sierra Leoneans.
Deputy Bank Governor Sheik Alhaji Yayah Sesay, who attended the parade, emphasized the platform’s numerous benefits. He highlighted that the system simplifies financial transactions, enhances the efficiency of the banking sector, and contributes to a more robust economy.
Sesay noted that the platform would facilitate quick and secure money transfers for businesses, government agencies, and individuals, fostering financial growth and stability.
The event was well-attended by several prominent banks, including Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, Rokel Commercial Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, and Eco Bank. Mobile money operators such as Orange and Africell also participated, demonstrating their support for the initiative. Two microfinance institutions were present, showcasing the platform’s broad reach and inclusivity.
The Instant Payment Platform is now live, and interested individuals can register with their bank or mobile wallet operator to participate. To register, visit your bank or contact your mobile wallet provider for more details.
With the introduction of the Salone Payment Switch, Sierra Leone is advancing towards a more connected and efficient digital financial ecosystem, which will benefit both businesses and citizens across the country.
