Freetown, Sierra Leone – September 2024 – Prince Kuti George, popularly known as Innocent, a renowned Sierra Leonean musician, has opened up about his path to success and the resilience required to navigate the challenges he faced, particularly criticism for his political affiliations. Innocent’s story is a powerful example of staying true to one’s convictions in the face of adversity, and it has become an inspiration for both aspiring musicians and the wider Sierra Leonean community.
In a recent social media post, Innocent shared insights into his personal and professional life, with a particular focus on the backlash he faced for publicly supporting the All People’s Congress (APC). As a musician, Innocent’s decision to endorse a political party sparked significant controversy. “I’m not your typical artist,” Innocent wrote. “When I started expressing my political views, I encountered strong opposition. Critics argued that artists should remain neutral and not endorse political parties publicly. The backlash was intense and, at times, pushed me towards depression.”
Despite the criticism, Innocent remained steadfast in his beliefs, advocating for artists’ freedom to express political views—a right he feels has gained more acceptance today. “I realized that people often support what benefits them personally and resist what does not. Despite these challenges, I am pleased to see that today’s artists have the freedom to support political causes—a right I advocated for,” he noted.
After his political involvement, Innocent relocated to the United Kingdom, where he continued to make waves as a Sierra Leonean artist on the international stage. “I became the first Sierra Leonean artist to make a notable impact in the UK and achieved remarkable success with my music. I have toured many countries and held successful shows, yet I keep my achievements modest. What I earn is for me and my family,” Innocent reflected.
Among his accomplishments, Innocent proudly highlighted his milestone of selling out the prestigious Lighthouse Theatre, a first for a Sierra Leonean artist in the diaspora. “I’m not the best, nor am I signed to a major record label, but I achieved this success without any political connections,” he added, emphasizing his independence and hard-earned success.
Innocent is well-known for his hit songs, including We Dae Gee Den Notice, All Man Na Mumu, Holy, and Suffer Porsh, among others. His contributions to the music industry have not gone unnoticed; in 2023, he was honored with the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, recognizing his significant impact and achievements.
