Chinese Envoy Assures Support for Judiciary

Chief Justice’s Chambers, Main Law Courts Building, Freetown, January 15, 2025: The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Wang Qing, on his first courtesy visit to the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, assured him of the Chinese government’s commitment to support the judiciary in achieving its core objectives and values.

Speaking in the Chambers of the Hon. Chief Justice, the Chinese Ambassador highlighted the longstanding bilateral relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Sierra Leone, dating back to 1971. He stressed his government’s commitment to supporting the judiciary whenever called upon.

Ambassador Wang Qing explained that his visit aimed to update the Chief Justice on projects that the Chinese government is undertaking and implementing in Sierra Leone, and to foster goodwill between the Embassy and the judiciary. He referenced the Embassy’s recent launch of a book authored by Professor David Francis, noting that the strong ties between both countries have led to numerous achievements, including visits, education, technology, investments, and trade.

The Ambassador commended the people of Sierra Leone for their friendliness and the warm reception he has received since his arrival in Sierra Leone in January 2023. He expressed gratitude to the Hon. Chief Justice and the leadership of the judiciary for the opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the judicial systems of the two countries.

In response, the Hon. Chief Justice highlighted areas where cooperation and support would be timely, including infrastructural development, solar systems to boost energy supply, capacity building for judges, magistrates, and senior support staff, advanced technology, and effective internet connectivity. He expressed his intention to ensure the refurbishment and electrification of provincial courts through the provision of solar lights or generators across the country and the establishment of an e-library, provided the necessary funds are available.

The Hon. Chief Justice thanked the government and people of China for the longstanding cooperation between the two countries, which he described as mutually beneficial.
