S/Leone Recalls Envoy to Guinea

Freetown, January 16, 2025—The Government of Sierra Leone has urgently recalled its Ambassador to Guinea, Mr. Alimamy Bangura, to provide a full account of how a substance believed to be cocaine ended up in the embassy’s utility vehicle. This was announced by Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Timothy Kabba, during a news conference in Freetown on Thursday.

Minister Kabba stated, “The Government of Guinea informed the Government of Sierra Leone that a vehicle belonging to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Conakry was impounded by the Guinean authorities. The driver and another occupant of the vehicle are being held on suspicion of possession of substances suspected to be cocaine.”

“In light of this serious development, the Government has urgently recalled Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Guinea, Mr. Alimamy Bangura, to Freetown to provide a full account of the incident. Additionally, a thorough investigation has been launched to determine how this incident occurred and to hold all responsible parties accountable.”

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the Government of Sierra Leone is collaborating with the Guinean authorities to verify the facts of the matter. He added that anyone found guilty of breaking Sierra Leonean and international drug trafficking laws will face the full force of the law.
