Energy Project Mishap: One Killed, One Injured

Kambia, Sierra Leone (March 16, 2025) – A devastating accident in Kambia on Friday, March 14, 2025, has claimed the life of one contractor and left another injured. The incident occurred during the stringing of transmission lines by workers of CL Group Limited, a contractor for the Ministry of Energy.

According to an official statement from the Ministry, Abu Kamara and Abdulai Mustapha were atop an electricity pole when it unexpectedly broke, causing both men to fall. Tragically, Abu Kamara lost his life in the accident, while Abdulai Mustapha sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, where he is reportedly responding well.

The Ministry of Energy has expressed profound condolences to the bereaved family and CL Group Limited. The statement also highlights the Ministry’s deep concern over workplace safety, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the well-being of all involved in its projects.

The Ministry revealed that the contract awarded to CL Group Limited in August 2020 was for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of transmission and distribution networks in Kambia Town. Officials assured the public that the contract adhered to all procedural requirements.

An investigation has been announced to determine the quality of the poles used and whether they meet the specifications outlined in the contract. The Ministry emphasized its dedication to the safety of the public and pledged to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The tragic incident has brought workplace safety into sharp focus, as the Ministry vows to prioritize such concerns moving forward.
