The European Union (EU) has played a pivotal role in transforming transportation infrastructure in Sierra Leone, particularly in Bo. Through strategic investment, the EU has created safer roads, facilitated smoother business operations, and significantly reduced transportation costs. These improvements have bolstered the local economy and improved the quality of life for traders, commuters, and residents.
One of the most significant outcomes of the EU’s intervention is the dramatic improvement in road safety. Poor road conditions in Sierra Leone posed serious risks to drivers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, often leading to frequent accidents and fatalities. The rehabilitation and expansion of major roads, including highways, feeder roads, and bridges in Bo and surrounding communities, have led to a sharp decrease in accident rates, providing much-needed relief to local communities.
Joseph Abu, a teacher and elder from the Njairu community along the Bo-Liberia Highway, near River Mao in Bo, shared his personal experience: “Before the road improvements, accidents were common, and many lives were lost due to potholes and poor road networks. Now, with better roads and proper traffic management, we feel much safer.”
Abu’s sentiments were echoed by other residents, especially regarding the transformation of key infrastructure. He added: “People all over the world have faced this challenge. The last time, about four people drowned in this Moa river—two of them were foreigners. But now, it is safe. You can cross this river at any time, even at night. Whenever you want to cross, you can do so safely.”
The river crossing, once a perilous task, has now become a safe and reliable route. Abu continued, expressing gratitude for the improvements made: “I am very thankful to the EU and the construction workers who did an excellent job. Before, we used to spend two, three, or even four hours trying to cross. Yes, it is a blessing. The bridge is not just an infrastructure project—it is a tool for changing people’s lives. It improves daily life and strengthens economic relations between countries in the region. Now, people can transport goods more easily.”
EU Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Jacek Jankowski, emphasized the importance of the road project: “This project is significant—not just because we are building a road, but because we are building it for the people. Infrastructure like this has a direct impact on local communities, improving their daily lives and economic opportunities. This road serves as a crucial corridor connecting the south to the north of the country, facilitating better movement and trade.”
He further highlighted the benefits of a well-constructed road network: “A well-constructed road network is essential for people to thrive, making transportation more efficient, reducing costs, and cutting down travel time. The Mank Junction, Mallow Junction, and Mank Bridge will play a key role in strengthening this connectivity.”
The Ambassador also expressed his satisfaction with the EU’s continued involvement in infrastructure development: “I’m very pleased that the European Union remains actively engaged in supporting this initiative.”
Beyond road construction, the Ambassador highlighted the broader economic benefits of improved transportation infrastructure: “Improved bridges and roads have enabled more efficient transportation, allowing goods and people to move more freely between communities and markets. The EU’s investment in transportation infrastructure has significantly impacted trade in Bo and its surrounding areas. Before the improvements, traders faced numerous challenges in transporting goods due to poor roads, resulting in delays and increased costs. However, with the new and improved road networks, these traders now benefit from faster and more efficient transportation systems.”
Local farmers, such as Zainab Kamara from Mabang community, have also seen tangible benefits: “We used to struggle with transporting our agricultural products to the market,” said Kamara. “Sometimes, perishable goods would spoil due to long delays on bad roads. Now, with improved roads, we can reach the market on time, and our profits have increased.”
The better road infrastructure has also attracted new businesses and investors to the region. The influx of investment has fostered job creation, stimulating economic expansion. Markets in Bo and surrounding areas have become more vibrant, and business owners report higher revenues due to improved transport services and increased efficiency in the movement of goods.
In addition to improving safety and promoting business growth, the EU’s intervention has led to a significant reduction in transportation costs. Poor road conditions had previously caused high vehicle maintenance expenses and increased fuel consumption, resulting in costly transportation fares. However, with the recent rehabilitation of roads and bridges, transport costs have dropped, benefiting both passengers and business owners alike. “The transport fares have gone down, and we no longer have to pay exorbitant prices to move from one place to another,” remarked Abdul Kanu, a local trader, highlighting the economic relief provided by the improved infrastructure. These changes have made daily commuting more affordable for residents and facilitated the smoother operation of businesses across the region.
The EU’s commitment to infrastructure development in Sierra Leone has contributed significantly to the country’s broader economic growth and social stability. Improved transportation networks have allowed businesses to thrive, communities to remain better connected, and individuals to enjoy a higher quality of life. This transformation has helped lay the foundation for long-term economic prosperity in the region.
As Sierra Leone continues to develop, stakeholders emphasize the importance of maintaining and expanding the road infrastructure to ensure that the benefits are sustained for future generations. The EU’s intervention serves as an exemplary model of how strategic investments in infrastructure can catalyze community development, promote regional economic integration, and drive prosperity.
Looking ahead, Sierra Leone’s position in regional trade and economic development is set to further strengthen, thanks to ongoing improvements in its transportation networks. With the continued collaboration between international partners like the EU and local communities, Sierra Leone is poised for a future of greater economic integration and sustained growth.
