Future of Gymnastics in Sierra Leone Looks Bright

February 15, 2025—The President of the Sierra Leone Gymnastics Federation (SLGF), Anna Williams, has expressed optimism about the future of gymnastics in the country. She noted that their gymnasts are overcoming challenges and demonstrating that with practice and perseverance, anything is possible.

With a significant shipment of gymnastics and circus equipment from China and Japan, Madam Williams and her executive team have made the sport highly attractive to school-going children and young adults from vulnerable communities.

“The future of gymnastics is bright; our gymnasts are pushing past challenges and proving that with practice and perseverance, anything is possible. We’re proud to be a part of their journey, helping them develop their skills, strength, and confidence to become the gymnasts they aspire to be,” she stated.

Madam Williams highlighted the popularity of their gymnastics training ground at the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs on Kingharman Road in Freetown. She emphasized that the new equipment will significantly aid the development of the children’s skills during their weekly sessions.

“A key part of our plan is to encourage children and young adults from various schools and vulnerable communities to keep physically active and provide our communities with quality leisure and sports opportunities. Investing in this new equipment shows our commitment to developing the sport. We hope to explore bold predictions and potential new rules that could shape the future of gymnastics through safety revolution, innovative technologies, increased accessibility, and global collaboration. Our wide programme of activities aims to involve children in the sport in a fun and supportive environment,” Madam Williams affirmed.

She concluded by expressing her gratitude to the government of Sierra Leone through the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and the People’s Republic of China for contributing to the rapid growth of gymnastics in Sierra Leone at both local and international levels.

“On behalf of the entire executive, the technical team, and the gymnasts, I want to register my profound gratitude to the dynamic leaders of the NSA, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, for his unwavering support, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone for making gymnastics one of the enviable sports in the country, the Ministry of Sports, and the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for providing us the opportunity and facilities to develop gymnastics in Sierra Leone. We appreciate you all and want to assure you that we will continue to make you proud at local and international levels,” Madam Williams concluded.
