Renowned German music director Stephan Flore is making waves in Sierra Leone’s music scene, offering guidance and mentorship to local musicians. In a recent interview, Flore underscored the importance of formal music education and mentorship, advising Sierra Leonean musicians to seek not only technical skills but a deep understanding of their craft. “Knowledge is the key to success in anything one is doing,” Flore said, stressing the need for musicians to understand not just how to play music, but when and why.

Flore, who considers Sierra Leone his “second motherland,” has a personal connection to the country, having adopted a Sierra Leonean daughter in 2012. He recalled how his first visit left a lasting impression, particularly the vibrant performances of local dance troupes. “It was my first encounter with the beauty of African music, and it left a lasting impression on me,” he said.

In April 2022, Flore led a workshop at the Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts, Sierra Leone’s only music school. The workshop focused on classical music and techniques for brass and wind instruments, drawing participants from various bands, including the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) Band and local secondary school groups.

Flore pointed out a shortage of professional wind instrument teachers in the country. While there are qualified instructors for other genres, specialized brass and wind teachers remain scarce, a gap Flore has been keen to address. “This gap prompted me to focus my training on these areas,” he explained.

Flore praised the Ballanta Academy for its pivotal role in developing the country’s music culture, urging both local and international support to help the institution grow. His involvement in Sierra Leone’s music education has been facilitated by Dr. Kitty Fadlu-Deen, co-founder of the academy. “Dr. Fadlu-Deen’s passion for music and commitment to Sierra Leone inspired me to offer my services,” he said.

Flore’s continued commitment to Sierra Leone reflects his desire to enhance the creativity of local musicians, helping them grow both individually and within the broader context of the country’s musical heritage.
