Freetown, Sierra Leone – Sierra Leone’s Information Ministry announced on Sunday that it is investigating media reports claiming that European cocaine kingpin Jos Leijdekkers is in the country.

Leijdekkers was sentenced in absentia to 24 years in prison by a Dutch court last June for smuggling more than 7 tonnes of cocaine. Reports also suggested that Leijdekkers was seen in photographs taken during events attended by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and his family.

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education clarified that during the festive season, the President attended numerous family events and public gatherings where photographs were taken with many attendees. “The President has no knowledge of the identity and the issues detailed in the reports about the individual in question,” the ministry stated.

Additionally, the ministry noted that the Government of Sierra Leone has not received any formal communication from any country or institution regarding Jos Leijdekkers. “The investigation will establish identity and alleged activities and facts surrounding allegations on one Jos Leijdekkers. The Sierra Leone Police is ready to collaborate with the Dutch Government, Interpol, and other international law enforcement agencies to ensure full cooperation and accountability,” the statement added.

The Government of Sierra Leone strongly reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to combating transnational crime, including drug, arms, and human trafficking, as well as all forms of terrorism. The investigation aims to ensure thorough cooperation and accountability in addressing these serious allegations.
