Freetown, Sierra Leone: In a significant step toward combating the MPOX outbreak, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, received the first dose of the MPOX vaccine during the official launch of the vaccination campaign. The event, held at the CCSL compound in Freetown, marked the beginning of a nationwide initiative targeting frontline workers and high-risk groups.

Dr. Demby emphasized the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure against MPOX, describing it as a “catalyst for protection.” He highlighted the availability of over 61,000 vaccine doses for individuals aged 12 and above, healthcare workers, and other vulnerable groups. The Minister also underscored the role of hygiene practices, such as handwashing, in preventing the spread of the disease.

With over 100 recorded cases and two fatalities, Dr. Demby described the outbreak as a public health emergency requiring urgent attention. He called on community stakeholders to support health authorities by identifying and reporting symptoms, facilitating early treatment, and breaking the chain of transmission. The Western Area Rural and Urban regions have reported the highest number of cases, underscoring the need for localized interventions.

Dr. Demby urged communities to take collective action, stressing that even a single case poses a significant risk to families, communities, and the nation. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the outbreak through vaccination and community-driven efforts.

This campaign represents a critical effort to curb the spread of MPOX and protect public health across Sierra Leone.
