Kamelia Kargbo, a 60-year-old resident of Aberdeen, was crowned the winner of the 2024 Miss Old is Gold Beauty Pageant, hosted by the Dorwontony Organization for the Aged (DOFA) at the Freetown City Council Auditorium. The competition featured contestants from various communities, including Yams Farm, Congo Town, Susan’s Bay, and Kroo Bay, celebrating the importance of honoring the elderly in Sierra Leonean society.
Chief Judge Ambassador Soulay Daramy emphasized that every participant was a winner, while DOFA’s Chairman, Father Peter Kanteh, called for increased respect and privileges for the elderly. The Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, applauded the event for promoting intergenerational connections.
Kargbo’s win, alongside awards for Miss Personality (Kadie Johnson from Yams Farm) and Miss Talent (Isatu Bongo Sesay from Susan’s Bay), symbolizes a growing appreciation for seniors. First and second runners-up were Jebbeh Conteh of Congo Town and Aminata Sesay of Kroo Bay.
DOFA, led by CEO Doreen Barrie, seeks to raise awareness about the needs of older individuals and advocates for their rights through initiatives like this pageant. Barrie emphasized the importance of showcasing seniors’ talents, boosting their confidence, and reminding society of their value. The event garnered support from Rokel Commercial Bank, DSTV, and AYV, reinforcing DOFA’s mission to protect the dignity and well-being of the elderly.
