Freetown, Sierra Leone – October 1, 2024: The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) in collaboration with the Regional Maritime University (RMU), has officially launched the second phase of its Seafarers’ Training Program on the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 5 Basic Safety Mandatory Courses. The training is being conducted at the Country Lodge Hotel in Freetown.
This initiative, aimed at equipping seafarers with essential skills for safe maritime operations, reflects the SLMA’s commitment to enhancing the safety and professionalism of the country’s maritime workforce. The IMO 5 Basic Safety Mandatory Courses cover critical areas, including fire prevention and firefighting personal survival techniques, first aid, personal safety, and social responsibility.
The Regional Maritime University, renowned for its excellence in maritime education across the region, has brought its wealth of expertise to this program. Mr. Rex Bonapha, Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, highlighted the growing importance of building a highly trained and skilled seafaring workforce in today’s global shipping industry. “By providing quality training, we are ensuring that our seafarers remain competitive and capable of handling the challenges of modern seafaring,” he stated.
This second round of training, following the success of the inaugural program, marks a significant step in developing Sierra Leone’s maritime sector, ultimately contributing to safety at sea and the sustainable growth of the nation’s maritime industry.
Upon completion, the participants will be awarded internationally recognized certifications, ensuring they are fully compliant with global maritime regulations.
